(REVIEW) Dream by Robbi Bryant

Hello lovely readers. I have to say I feel bad about how long I have had this book. We are looking at 4 years in queue. It’s no joke in my review policy when I say I take years to review… It’s a big pile. Anywhos, at long last here is my spoiler free review of Dream by Robbi Sommers Bryant. This isn’t an easy book to review. It has a complicated, unlikable protagonists and a plot that is hard to describe without giving too much away. I feel like if you are interested in the story, you’ll have to just go on the ride that is this book without too much advance knowledge to have the richest experience.

Without further ado, my review:

Description: Veronica is addicted to infatuation and can’t stay loyal to her husband Joe. Joe knows about her problem and they have an understanding that she can do what she wants as long as he never has to know about it. Enter Andrew, the artist. Andrew is a one night stand but he introduces Veronica to the magic of dream walking. After Veronica is abducted in the dream it turns into a nightmare for Andrew who wont be able to explain her disappearance in the waking world. Within the dream another reality is discovered and a new fate is offered.

“Secrets, laden with promises of abandon, swirl in his lush, forest eyes.”

In Short: This fantasy tale takes you on a bizarre adventure that shifts through various genres as it goes along. It poses the question, what would you do if you found out living in your dreams might be your destiny, would you risk a life you perceive as real to take the plunge into a new realm.

Pros: The story was very fast paced and quite the wild ride that covered a lot of ground in so few pages. The story definitely kept me interested and I read the book quickly over the course of 2 nights. I like the fantasy world created in this book. The way two different but both equally real worlds have a pull on the characters. I liked the creative use of magic in this story. My favorite part was the ending, it was a surprising twist and a totally awesome way to end that strange adventure. It couldn’t have been a more satisfying conclusion and happily ever after for everyone involved. At every turn this book shocked me.

“I’m ecstatic when howls ride the wind to meet my calls.”

Cons: There are some things that don’t really make sense in this story. At times it’s too hard to suspend disbelief. Her husband for example acting like a big tough guy but then easily trusting a stranger in a most vulnerable way. Sorry for the vagueness, but I’m trying to keep it spoiler free. I couldn’t believe the dumb stuff they kept falling for in the dream world either. I can’t forgive them for putting questionable things in their mouths, have they no survival instinct? I didn’t like any of the characters. But their personalities were what made the story possible. At first when the story was centered on Veronica I had a hard time getting into it because I thought she was just the most selfish person, completely lacking will power. I thought the way she couldn’t not cheat on her husband was a pathetic cop-out. It made more sense later but she was still unlikable and very ditzy. It says in the book “A well-known fact, wolves mate for life” but then the characters of this book are all cheaters. So that feels like a plot hole. I wasn’t liking the multiple points of view at first. I thought when it switched to Andrew’s perspective it suddenly sounded like diary entries or something and it was distracting. Quickly the perspective switching made sense and was easier to follow.

Parent’s Guide: Sex (not very graphic), depiction of smoking cannabis, swearing.
